The State Liaison Office of National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell was opened under the department of Sports & Youth Services w.e.f. 3rd October, 1988. The office was located at Civil Secretariat , Government of Mizoram. The office is headed by State Liaison Officer with supporting staff of 1 (one) UDC cum Accountant, 1(one) LDC and 1(one) Peon.
Earlier, the NSS was look after by the office of Director, Sport & Youth Services, Government of Mizoram during which the NSS was introduce only in 13 Colleges having the NSS volunteer strength of 6000 studens. The Colleges having NSS are :

2. Lunglei Govt. College
3. Aizawl College
4. Champhai College
5. Serchhip College
6. Zirtiri Women’s College
7. Kolasib College
8. Hnahthial College
9. Aizawl North College
10. Lawngtlai College
11. Saiha College
12. J. Buana College
13. Hrangbana College
Since the State Liaison Office is started functioning the NSS in Mizoram id developing and fast growing. Presently NSS Unit is introduce in 25 Colleges and 49 +2 Schools with the NSS volunteer strength of 23100.
The NSS Mizoram is doing commendable service for the community in different places at rural and urban areas. The main activities taken up by the NSS are : Tree Plantation, Blood Donation, Awareness Campaign on various fields like – HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuses, Sanitation and Personal Hygiene, etc.
Some durable assets like – Urinal, Water Point, Waiting Shed and Pavillion, Public Bathroom were constructed at different places. Other social works like cleaning and clearing of the public places and road side is also the commendable works done by the NSS volunteers.
